Dictionaries undergo a lot of changes and dictionary revisers do their work every day. Every dictionary editor knows that the purpose of any dictionary is to compile an essential, well-organized mass of words, which are often difficult for most people to understand. For this reason, dictionary editors work hard to ensure that words are not misspelled or mistranslated, articles and phrases are placed in the right places, and that the meaning of a phrase or a sentence is not distorted by insertion of explanatory phrases, adverbs or keywords. A dictionary is thus a living thing, which changes and evolves with the changing needs of society. The work of any dictionary editor is therefore never-ending, as the dictionary itself must be reviled and updated continuously so as to cater to the changing needs of the human race.
Although the dictionary is ultimately a literary work, it is important for it to reflect societal attitudes and ideas, as well as the changing needs of the people. As such, dictionary editors spend hours doing exhaustive research in all aspects of language and culture, including sexual orientation and its definition. As more societal problems surface (like discrimination, intolerance, hostility, and violence), the need for a comprehensive, accurate and user-friendly encyclopedic dictionary also increases. This is where the work of a dictionary editor becomes crucial, as he or she has to make sure that the Sexual Orientation In Language Dictionary (SOFL) and the Word Families In Language Dictionary (WFYL) remain two of the most popular reference tools in schools and colleges, because they provide a platform for learning about sexual orientation and the use of the language to express individual’s sexual preference.
A great work does not only have to be created well; it must also be timeless. This is perhaps one of the reasons why editors for both the SOFL and WFYL have been very careful in making changes and amendments to the already existing dictionary, in order to make it even more useful to students and the general public. The first edition of these two dictionaries were published in 1996 and the latest edition was released in 2021, just before the World Wide Web became readily accessible. The most recent edition of the Dictionary of Modern English (DMEM) was launched in May 2021 and proved to be another great success, becoming even more popular than the first edition.
